FAQS

Starting something new usually comes with a few questions. If you’re thinking about trying Latin or ballroom dance classes in Peterborough, this page is here to help you feel prepared and confident before getting started.

Below are answers to the most common questions about classes at PTBO Ballroom — from what to wear, to whether you need a partner, to what your first class will feel like — so you know exactly what to expect before walking through the door.

No, you do not need a partner. Many students attend on their own, and partner rotation is incorporated into class so everyone gains experience and builds confidence.

If you come with a partner and prefer to stay together, that option is also available.

Wear something comfortable that you can move in easily.

Clean indoor shoes are required. Running shoes are fine to start (though they can feel a bit sticky), and many dancers prefer shoes with a smoother sole for easier turning.

Yes. Classes are structured to support beginners, with foundational steps taught clearly and built up gradually. No prior experience is required.

Level-based and progressive options are also available for dancers who are ready to expand their skills.

Beginner progressive programs do not require prior experience. They’re designed to build week to week, starting with the fundamentals and progressing gradually.

Level One classes are better suited for dancers who already know the basic step of a style and are ready to expand from there. If you’re unsure which class is the right fit, I’m also happy to chat to help guide you toward the right fit.

Latin and ballroom are two categories of partner dance with different movement styles and musical foundations.

Latin dances — such as salsa, bachata, cha cha, and merengue — developed from Latin American and Afro-Caribbean music traditions. They’re typically rhythm-driven, more grounded, and often danced in smaller patterns with an emphasis on timing and hip action.

Ballroom dances — such as waltz, foxtrot, and tango — evolved in European and North American social settings. They tend to travel across the floor and focus on posture, frame, and smooth coordination between partners.

Yes. All PTBO Ballroom classes are designed for adults and are 18+.

Our focus is on creating a comfortable, adult learning environment centred around social Latin and ballroom dance.

WEDDING DANCE LESSON faqs

Timelines can vary, and ultimately it’s up to you and how you’d like your first dance to feel.

As a general guideline, many couples begin wedding dance lessons at least two to four months before their wedding. This gives enough time to build comfort, practice consistently, and feel relaxed on the dance floor.

Recommendations are based on your schedule, your goals, and how simple or involved you’d like your choreography to be.

Yes. You don’t need a fully choreographed routine to benefit from wedding dance lessons.

Many couples prefer something simple and natural. We can focus on comfort, connection, and learning a few easy movements that feel relaxed and look smooth. Lessons can be structured to help you move well together without it looking rehearsed or complicated.

The number of dance lessons you’ll need depends on your timeline and what you’re hoping to achieve. Reach out to share your vision, and a recommendation can be tailored to your goals, schedule, and budget.

Common concerns

Beginner classes are fun and approachable for everyone, including people who are convinced they “can’t dance.” Steps are introduced clearly and practiced to music in a way that helps timing click naturally. No one is expected to get it perfectly right away. Mistakes are always welcome!

Many students who walk in convinced they have no rhythm leave class smiling, surprised at how much they were able to do. The environment is supportive, the pace is manageable, and improvement happens more quickly than most people expect.

Ballroom and Latin dance are skills you can begin at any stage of adulthood. Many students start later in life.

Classes move at a steady, supportive pace, and progress happens gradually. Whether you’re looking for a new hobby, a social outlet, or a different way to stay active, there’s space for you at PTBO Ballroom.

No, classes at PTBO Ballroom are not competitive or performance based.

Our Peterborough classes are designed around social partner dancing. You’ll learn skills you can use comfortably at weddings, social events, dance nights, or simply for your own enjoyment. The focus is on building confidence, understanding timing, and moving well with a partner in a relaxed and supportive setting.
